Boomplay is an African streaming company that has expanded rapidly since it was first launched in 2015. Streaming service has raised $20 million in a Series A round.

Boomplay is owned by Transsion Holdings, the China-based top phone maker in Africa, and NetEase, a Chinese internet company that has already built a music streaming service in China boasting 400 million users.

Service type

  • Premium Service – a monthly premium on-demand subscription service in standard audio quality.
  • Ad-Supported Service – an ad-supported, free to the end-user, streaming service that provides on-demand functionality via both mobile devices and desktop devices (streams via desktop devices are limited to 30-second clips) in low audio quality.
  • Download Service – an ‘a la carte’ permanent download service of single music tracks, EPs, albums and videos.

Pay rate

Paid Streams: When a subscriber streams your music, you get paid a proportionate share of Boomplay’s subscription revenue per month, calculated based on terms set out in our platforms’s blanket agreement with the store (this usually excludes streams during a subscriber’s free trial). Payments will fluctuate each month, depending on the amount of subscription revenue generated and how often your music was streamed.

Paid Downloads: Downloads are available through Boomplay. Payouts are based on territory-specific rates, so for songs downloaded individually, you will be paid the wholesale price of Boomplay’s retail price, calculated based on terms set out in our platforms’s blanket agreement with the store.
